Dungeon Crawl Classics

Since 2004 I have painted and drawn cartoons, covers, maps and other interior illustrations for Goodman Games’ popular Dungeon Crawl Classics Role Playing Game. It’s so much fun to work on these titles, and I’m thrilled to see my images appear along side legendary 1st Edition D&D artists such as Erol Otus, and Jeff Easley, as well as so many other amazing artists and talented writers.

Dungeon Crawl Classics Art by Chuck Whelon

Chuck Whelon has been collaborating with Goodman Games for over two decades, contributing a wide range of illustrations for their fantasy role-playing game lines. From cartoons to covers, from interior artwork to intricate maps, his work has helped define the visual identity of some of the most beloved tabletop RPGs in the industry.

One of his earliest contributions was the cartoons featured throughout the Dungeon Crawl Classics Rulebook, where his humor and attention to detail brought levity and character to the pages. Over the years, he has illustrated covers for Dungeon Crawl Classics and XCrawl Classics modules, as well as the XCrawl Classics Softcover Rulebook, giving each project a unique, immersive fantasy aesthetic.

In addition to covers and cartoons, Chuck has provided extensive interior illustrations, adding depth and personality to the worlds created within the rulebooks. His artwork helps bring monsters, characters, and fantastical locations to life, enhancing the gameplay experience for both players and game masters.

More recently, Chuck has focused on creating illustrated maps for Goodman Games. These maps combine many aspects of his work — from character design and environment illustration to clever visual storytelling — creating fully realized, engaging spaces for players to explore. His maps not only serve as practical gaming tools but also stand alone as pieces of art that capture the imagination.

Working with Goodman Games, alongside a great many other talented creators, has allowed Chuck to combine his passion for fantasy, storytelling, and visual design. His contributions span multiple decades and demonstrate a consistent dedication to quality and creativity in the tabletop gaming space. Whether through playful cartoons, detailed interior illustrations, or expansive maps, his work has helped make Dungeon Crawl Classics and XCrawl Classics some of the most visually distinctive lines in role-playing games today.

For fans of tabletop RPGs, Chuck Whelon’s illustrations provide more than decoration — they help shape the tone, humor, and atmosphere of every adventure. His artwork invites players into vivid fantasy worlds where every module and rulebook becomes an immersive experience.
